Un palmier m’apparut bien seul à Rusâfa
En Occident, très loin du pays des palmiers

Je lui dis: Tu es semblable à moi par l’exil
Et par l’absence des enfants et des parents

Tu as grandi dans une terre étrangère
Et comme moi tu es banni, expatrié

Que les blancs nuages du matin t’arrosent
Eux qui puisent leur eau dans les étoiles.

A palm tree appeared to me alone in Rusafa
In the West, far from the land of palm trees

I said to it, "You are like me in exile
And in the absence of children and parents

You grew up in a foreign land
And like me you are banished, expatriate

Let the white clouds of the morning water you
They who draw their water from the stars.
